The Computer & Eye Health

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Rohto. All opinions and text are my own.

Just because you sit in front of a computer all day doesn't mean you have to suffer the pain because of it. Learn how to prevent computer eye strain even while going to school or working a 9-5.

Whether you’re writing a school paper or working 9-5 at a desk, we spend a lot of time in front of computers. As a blogger and someone that works a full-time office job, I am so guilty. Eye health has always been important, but now as we spend so much time in front of screens, it’s even more important to take care of our eyes.

Constantly looking at a screen- whether it be the computer, a cell phone or the TV- can cause what is known as computer eye strain (also called digital eye strain or computer vision syndrome). Symptoms include everything from headache to blurred vision and dry eyes.

Technology is a blessing in so many ways, but with it, we really need to take extra measures to protect our vision. You can avoid computer eye strain be factoring in these five tips:

Eye Drops

Every day isn’t perfect. We can help protect our eyes by controlling our lighting, taking breaks and more, but sometimes we can’t control the lighting; Sometimes we can’t get away from our desks because the work is piled high. To help your eyes even while sitting in front of a screen, you can always revert to eye drops. Rohto has a number of different eye drop options to choose from- Itch Relief, Multi-Symptom Relief, Dry Eye Relief, Redness Relief and Maximum Redness Relief- to help with any unwanted eye-related symptom.

The Maximum Redness Relief, for example, soothes eye strain, refreshes and lubricates and relieves redness of the eye. Don’t overlook that Rohto eye drops are also cooling, so if your eyes start to feel cool and tingly, that’s completely normal and means they’re working!

Since you can use these eye drops up to four times daily, you’ll be able to work comfortably even with a long day in front of the computer. You can pick them up at Walmart, Walgreens, Kroger, CVS and more.

Lighting

Maybe this seems obvious, but again, like eye strain in general, it’s just one of those things we don’t always think about. Having the proper amount of lighting will greatly reduce the amount of strain put on your eyes. You can have too much lighting or too little lighting. Avoid both sitting in the dark and sitting under harsh fluorescent lighting or bright light streaming in through a window. And while you’re checking the lighting around you, adjust your computer brightness to match the lighting. They should be the same level of brightness.

Blinking

It sounds silly to say, “make sure you’re blinking,” right? But sometimes we just get into the zone of our work and we can stare at the screen just a little bit too long. Don’t get me wrong, you’ll still blink! But blinking help keeps the front of your eyes moist and clean, so it never hurts to blink more than necessary. Especially as a contact wearer, I find myself blinking a lot.

Frequent Breaks

Taking frequent breaks from your computer is healthy for your eyes and also improves your concentration and productivity. Ideally, your break would include a walk or a little bit of sunshine, but even just taking a look away from your computer screen to talk to your cubicle-mate would be better than nothing. This will still give your eyes a break from focusing and staring into the blue light of your device.

Computer Glasses

Computer glasses are a serious game changer. I got my own pair last year, and I keep them at work, so I have them all the time. Don’t believe how important eye health is and how detrimental our computer screens can be? My office is buying computer glasses for our employees!

If you don’t know what computer glasses are, it’s pretty simple. Computer glasses have lenses with a special coating that reflects and absorbs the blue light that comes from your electronics and is harmful to your eyes. Blocking these harsh lights can relieve eye strain, itchiness, irritation and headaches caused by looking at your electronic screens for long periods of time.

To make them even more convenient, you can normally find computer glasses as reading glasses, prescription glasses or just plain computer glasses. I opted for regular computer glasses because I’m an avid contact wearer, and since I’m near-sighted, I don’t need glasses to look at my computer screen late at night even after I’ve taken out my contacts.

Have you noticed that tech companies are becoming more aware of digital eye strain? That’s why the iPhone now has auto-brightness and night shift (which turns your screen red instead of blue, eliminating blue light). I cannot express enough how amazing it is to see these kinds of shifts from large corporations, but it’s still our responsibility to ultimately protect our eye health. Not to mention, protecting your eyes will be all around more comfortable and enjoyable. No one likes dry eyes.

Have you ever used Rohto Eye Drops or tried out the eye-friendly iOS features? Have you suffered from computer eye strain?

Next-Gen Social Network

MeWe Next-Gen Social Network is the only social media network that has a Privacy Bill of Rights for its members. Can you believe that?

Guess what? I have exciting news! I joined the latest social media network: MeWe. The app just announced its launch on March 9 of this year, and it is already making a big impact. I honestly did not see myself joining another social media site anytime soon. I already manage a lot of social media sites between my blog and internship; I have so much going on, I don’t even have personal social media accounts anymore!

When I heard about MeWe, however, I knew I wanted to join, and I had two very good reasons. The first was that MeWe has multiple features that combine the functions of other social media sites, which makes it convenient. All of your favorite sharing tools are in one place. Some of my favorites are:

The first thing that I did after joining MeWe was create a group for you guys. The Ali in Bloom public group is just another way to stay up to date on new content. I will be posting about my latest blog posts, new Youtube videos, pictures that didn’t make it onto the blog, and behind-the-scenes fun! Even better, the group has its own personal chat room, so if you want to connect more personally with me or ask any questions that you might have about posts, a topic I’ve covered, my blog or life in general, you can connect with me quickly and easily there in the group chat- or private chat! A lot of you reach out on Facebook and Instagram, and I try to respond to each and every one of you. Having all of this communication streamlined into one app makes it way easier and faster for me to get back to all of you though. Connecting with readers is one of my favorite things about blogging, and I only hope that joining MeWe means I can hear from even more of you!

The second and honestly the biggest reason that I wanted to join MeWe was because it offers me something that no other social media can: privacy. You might think that sounds silly. I do post a lot about my life on the internet, so you might be thinking privacy isn’t my biggest concern, but I’m actually very particular about how much I do and do not share on my blog and social media channels. I like the option of being able to share what I want, and I don’t like the idea of anyone storing or owning my personal data. The goal is to share my life with you- not random third parties.

MeWe is the only social media network that has a Privacy Bill of Rights for its members. Can you believe that? I honestly had no idea that other social networks were so open and free with collecting and giving away our information, but I’m glad that I know now. Knowing that I have privacy and safety on MeWe means that I’ll be using MeWe as a way to share inside sneak peaks into my life! This doesn’t mean that I’m going to stop using other social media sites- not at all. This just means that I get to share more and be more comfortable sharing more with you all on MeWe!

Wondering why other social media networks are so unsafe? I’m no expert- even after hours of research, but some other bloggers who joined MeWe are spilling the beans. Here are other great blog posts to read on the privacy issues with other social networking sites:

Inside my VoxBox: Pilot FriXion Erasable Gel-Ink Pens

I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.

When I opened up my VoxBox, these Pilot FriXion Erasable Gel-Ink Pens were not the first thing I picked up. When I did, however, pick them up, I was amazed to discover that they were erasable! I had no idea. They looked so clean and professional compared to the stereotypical erasable pen that I used in middle school and always picture. I didn’t know a gel, retractable, erasable pen existed.

Further inspecting the eraser, I found that it isn’t the typical eraser either. It’s rubber and didn’t wear down after use. A never ending eraser? I think so… The Pilot pen website explains it like this: The heat generated by erasing friction causes our unique thermo-sensitive gel ink to become clear so the words disappear completely from the page.”

And to further my love for these pens, they erased just as well as they went on the page. All that’s left is a slight indentation on the page, which is perfect to write over again after your mistake. No one would ever know it’s there.
Good job, Pilot!

Unboxing my VoxBox

I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes
This past Friday was so exciting for me. Why, you may ask? I received my first voxbox from Influenster! Influenster is a popular company in Blogland, but just in case you’ve never heard of it, it is a company that sends complimentary products for review to bloggers/vloggers. All you have to do is fill out a brief pre-survey to see if you’re a right fit for a particular box, and then if you are, they ship it your way! After, you earn points for writing reviews! I definitely recommend checking it out. My first experience with them has been great so far.
^ My unopened box… It didn’t stay like this for long though; I tore right into it!
Okay, I was thoroughly impressed with how much they stuffed into such a little box! Inside my box was:
Pilot FriXion Erasable Pens In love… Individual post to come soon!
SinfulColors No Text Red Nail Polish Like A LOT… Individual post to come soon for this one too
Softlips Cube When I found out what was in my box, I was most excited about this cube. I recently finished my Nivea and Eos lip balms, so I’ve been dealing with chap lips for the past few days. Receiving this was a huge relief. My mom has bought Softlips classic lip balm for as long as I can remember, so I knew that I was ensured a quality product. As for the fresh mint flavor, I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t overwhelming (for some reason that tends to be a problem with mint). I totally recommend this.
Airheads Bites These little guys are so yummy. If you like original Airheads, then there is no question in my mind that you will like these. They taste exactly the same!
Have you tried any of these products? What did you think?
